Every year around 60% of the total population migrates from one place to another in search of better life. Better life means to them are the basic necessities –food, clothing.
The prominent reason for this movement is lack of jobs or desirable jobs to the place where labor shortage exists and where the attractive opportunities are. Other than that, both economic and demographic reasons account for labor shortage. Places that experience rapid economic growth and job expansion often have labor demand beyond the capacity of the local workforce. So they recruit labor from nearby and small places.
Sometimes, this demand and supply gap is so huge especially in India that recruiters are unable to get a desired candidate and therefore a migrant is unable to get jobs because of desired skill. This is hard reality when a migrant worker who worked relentlessly, away from his home and family is often neglected.
They are the unsung heroes who do the hard tasks and supported us at home as domestic helpers as well. So “Karuna” is a humble attempt to recognize the contributions of migrant workers in our everyday lives. “Karuna” means compassion. As a society, it is important that we are compassionate to the migrant workers who labor relentlessly, away from their homes and loved ones. It is very critical to take care of their welfare and help improve their lives, so they feel valued and have a sense of belonging in this foreign land.
While most people want to help, they find it hard in their busy schedule to find time. This app is an effort to connect the donors with the migrant workers virtually. So please open your hearts and contribute to the well-being of migrant workers. You can donate money or pre-loved items.
It is also an opportunity for the migrant workers to put forward their own wish list versus trying to use what is given to them.
Please join us in this mission of improving lives and celebrating the contributions of our migrant workers.
